Know Your Colleague – Santosh Hegde

In Near’s Know Your Colleague series, you will get to know the members of Team Near who play a key role in driving Near’s mission, values and day-to-day operations. This is a monthly series, and we shall have one employee cover every month. This month we asked a few questions to Santosh Hegde, Senior Manager, Data Engineering who is based out of our Bangalore office and has been with Near for more than one year. Here’s what he had to say:

Tell us more about yourself

I was born and brought up in a beautiful remote village in the middle of the Western Ghats of Karnataka. I did my schooling in the same place before I moved to Dharwad for B.Sc. in Agriculture Science. Later on i moved to the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun for M.Sc. in Geoinformatics and obtained Master’s Degree from University of Twente in Netherlands under the GEONIDIS Fellowship programme.

Below is the picture of me with my kids - Chirantan (11) and Parinita (3).

How would you describe your time at Near?

I have been associated with Near more than a year and it’s been one of the best work experiences so far. Interestingly, I have an opportunity to work with all the teams at Near and it helped me to explore a lot of new things in this industry.

Your interests outside of work

I try to make sure that my time outside office is as productive as possible. Long walks or runs of more than 10 km are one of my favourites which I try to do at least once a week. Meeting friends and spending time with them by discussing few interesting topics is one another things which interests me outside work.

Who are your icons?

I regard Prof. M. S. Swaminathan, who is considered as “Father of Indian Green Revolution” as my icon as he has been trying his best to make Indian farmers prosperous.

I have always held Dr. Vikram Sarabhai in high regards due to his scientific vision and founding the Indian Space Programme. Both of them have taken India to new heights and have highlighted India on the world map.

Anything off the track you want to do which you haven’t been able to accomplish till now?

Skydiving and Scuba dive are on the top of my to-do list.

Anything else you’d like to share that most of us don’t know:

I am a good cook (self-proclaimed as “good”!) and can prepare typical South Indian vegetarian dishes!

I am actively involved with Lions Bloodline and trying to help the needy people as much as I can. I have donated blood for more than 35 times till date including many Single Donor Platelets (SDP) donation.
